With a stingy defense and an opportunistic offense, Broadneck defeated Dundalk from Baltimore County, 17-6, in a 4A East region battle on Friday night to qualify for the state quarterfinal round.
After struggling to establish a run game against a stout Dundalk defense, Broadneck took to the air for big plays to put themselves in position to score. After turning the ball over on downs inside the Owls’ 5-yard line on their first possession, the Bruins again moved deep into Owls territory on the next drive, before settling for a short Chris Coleman field goal to take a 3-0 lead.
After struggling to maintain any sustained drives into the second quarter, Dundalk scored on a 50-yard run to take the lead 6-3, missing the extra point. Late in the second quarter, Broadneck again drove deep into Owls territory before quarterback CJ Watkins hit Eli Harris for a 5-yard touchdown, giving the Bruins a 10-6 halftime lead.
Broadneck again moved deep into Dundalk territory early in the third quarter, with Ian Mauldin scoring from three yards out to increase the Bruins’ lead to 17-6. From there, the defense tightened even more and did not allow the Owls any opportunities to move the ball into scoring position. The offense began to gain some traction on the ground, effectively shortening the game, before running out the clock to send the Bruins deeper into the postseason.
Broadneck will travel to Montgomery County next Friday or Saturday to face the Northwest Jaguars, which shocked two-time defending state champion Quince Orchard.
With the elimination of Quince Orchard, and the forfeit of last year's runner-up C.H. Flowers due to an ineligible player, the field for the 4A championship is wide open with the Bruins in the mix.
