SPRWC Awards Scholarship To Spalding Grad

Katie Lombardo, a 2020 graduate of Archbishop Spalding High School, is the winner of this year’s Severna Park Republican Women's Club (SPRWC) scholarship. The SPRWC sponsors a scholarship in memory of seven-term Congresswoman Marjorie Holt, one of the founding members of the club.

The scholarship was awarded based on the following essay question:

While women made up the majority of voters in the 2012 election — casting 53% of ballots, according to exit poll data analyzed by the Center for American Progress — they were shut off from the polls altogether just a century ago. It took 72 years of tireless work for American women to secure the right to vote. On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified.

Alice Paul, one of the suffragettes, said when talking about voting rights, “I never doubted equal rights was the right direction. Most reforms, most problems are complicated. But to me there is nothing complicated about equality.”

What difference do you see it has made in the elections in the last 100 years of women voting?

This year, eight submissions were received by the deadline. The essays were read and evaluated “blinded.”

Katie and her mom attended the SPRWC’s annual June membership picnic outdoors, as she received her $1,000 check. She plans to attend Catholic University in the fall to major in business administration.
