Severna Park Library To Commemorate Shakespeare’s 455th Birthday

Posted

Centuries after his death, William Shakespeare is still considered the world’s best English-language writer and dramatist. To celebrate the works of the writer, often referred to as the “Bard of Avon,” the Severna Park Library will host Shakespeare in the (Severna) Park on Saturday, April 13, at 2:00pm. There will be crafts, activities, games and a special performance by the Children’s Theatre of Annapolis.

“We are very excited about this program; it is our second year putting on this event,” said Samantha Zline of Severna Park Library. “Angela Pesi, library associate, and I are both big Shakespeare fans and we wanted to find a way to share our love of the Bard with the community.”

The family friendly event includes:

  • Decorate a mask for the costume party — Decorate a party mask so you can sneak into the Capulet ball with Romeo and Mercutio!
  • Make your Family Coat of Arms — Decorate a shield to represent your family’s history.
  • Scavenger Hunt — Find hidden images from classic Shakespeare film adaptations hidden through the library. Follow the clues to find them all and earn a prize.
  • Shakespeare Fortune Teller — Cut, color and fold a “cootie catcher” that is covered in Shakespeare references.
  • Draw the Shakespeare Quote — Kids can draw a Shakespeare quote from a jar and then illustrate what they think it means or how it makes them feel.

A special 30-minute adaptation of “Macbeth” will be performed by the Children’s Theatre of Annapolis’ Teen Acting Group (TAG) around 2:30pm. TAG is made up of 14 actors, ages 12 to 18, from Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties.

TAG performed last year for the first time at Shakespeare in the (Severna) Park. Beth Wilson, Children’s Theatre of Annapolis board president and TAG volunteer, is honored that the group will return this year.

“Teens enjoy performing the Shakespeare pieces once they have learned the meanings behind the lines,” Wilson said. “Acting helps to bring context and understanding to the words. The ‘Macbeth’ piece is new as they have only been working on it for a few weeks.”
