Coming into Friday’s game, Broadneck and Severna Park’s football teams demonstrated a penchant for track-meet style games with plenty of slinging the ball around and big plays to match.
Their head-to-head matchup, though, took on an all too familiar refrain. Broadneck scored on their first six drives and completely stymied Severna Park’s high-flying offense, cruising to a 49-7 victory.
The result stretched Broadneck’s dominance over Severna Park to 13 years – the Falcons haven’t won this matchup since 2011. But that doesn’t make the game any less meaningful.
“The kids get up for Severna Park. They play a lot of lacrosse and baseball with a lot of those guys, so it’s a good game, still a fun game,” said Broadneck coach Rob Harris. “We just want them to stay focused and realize that each day you need to get better, each game you need to get better, and I think they did a good job of that tonight.”
Nobody had more than 50 yards receiving for the Bruins, and seven players caught at least one pass. Joey Smargissi had the most targets, hauling in four catches for 44 yards and one of the Bruins’ seven touchdowns — and the sixth of the season for the senior receiver.
Ian Mauldin rushed for 101 yards on seven carries, adding two touchdowns — he now has 10 rushing scores and 11 total touchdowns on the season. C.J. Watkins had three passing touchdowns, facilitating the ball to multiple players. The Bruins racked up more than 200 yards on the ground.
Six Broadneck players found the end zone: Mauldin, Smargissi, Aaron Foote, Mari Hayes, Carson Pierce and Cordaro Foote.
“We love competition, and everything was clicking,” Smargissi said. “Everyone was clicking. Slots, outside receivers, Ian, C.J. … great job by all the guys.”
Through four games, the two teams had combined for countless explosive plays on both sides of the ball and special teams. But those momentum-swinging moments were at a premium on Friday: just a handful of plays went for more than 20 yards, and the game featured just one turnover, on Severna Park’s second possession.
Instead, it turned out to be the second-straight one-sided contest between the two rivals.
Broadneck’s defense took away the Falcons’ chief method of attack, the pass, and their best offensive weapon, junior receiver Cole Cavanaugh. Entering the game as the county’s leading statistical receiver, he caught just two passes for 26 yards. Senior quarterback Vince Nguyen, who threw for nearly 1,100 yards in the first four games of the season, completed just five of 12 passes for 47 yards and an interception. Running back Chase Griner totaled 68 yards on 18 carries.
The Bruins piled up 386 yards of offense — they outgained Severna Park 314-61 in the first half. Aaron Foote had 108 total yards to lead all players on the night.
The Falcons averted the shutout on their final possession, courtesy of a 10-yard Isaac Graves touchdown run on the play following their most successful play of the night, a 36-yard heave on fourth-and-33.
Severna Park (1-4) travels to Northeast for their next game on Thursday, October 10. The Falcons, having lost their last four games in the most difficult stretch of their season, are hoping to bounce back and string together some wins to build momentum for the postseason.
Broadneck (5-0) heads back home the same day to host Old Mill. Last season, Old Mill handed the Bruins their only county loss in the last four years.
“Every week’s a new week,” Smargissi said. “We have to put the work in that new week to keep things rolling.”
